Dont buy this     On: 2007-08-07

My main beef with this book is that, like everybody has already said, its just a collection of pictures and description with some "rah-rah-rah" pep talk included in between about being a renegade. Although, some routines are laid out like the speed and jump rope exercises, there was no explanation on how to incorporate it in a training plan. There was not even an explanation of basic physiology and training principles.

Its probably okay if you already have a basic foundation on training methodology but for a beginner or a novice, its better if you look somewhere else.

Plus, you can actually find in the internet 90% of the stuff in the book in John Daviess past articles.
Nice crazy book     On: 2007-01-04

This is how I trained. Run a 1.7 mile MOUNtain everyday in the heat of the say. Push cars back and forth in the heat of the day. Do 500 push ups a night. Kids and adults seem to think they can do something in some nice tights with arm bands and ipods and get stronger. Shoot throw that stuff out and roll in the dirt or forget it. Thanks CAVE MAN>
bad book by a fraud     On: 2006-10-25

Davies is a complete fraud but a brilliant marketer. the book cotains no detail to his training programs but rather a bunch of exercises. He outright lied about training Ben Johnson, which was totally false since Charlie Francis himself (bens trainer) said so, lied about designing the program at Clemson and Northwestern. All he does is take a bunch of different looking exercises and put them in a book. his programs are unstructured with no regards to recovery and the work loads are ubsurd. Awful book by a huge fraud
Over price status symbol book     On: 2005-09-24

Once again, I find another [...] publication not living up to the hype in other dragondoor books. The price [...] was not worth it. The book had few illustrations and and seldon corresponded to the type. A person could get very frustrated in trying to figure out how to do these few exercises. There were never enough illustrations to properly understand the exercises.Horrible - little thought went into this book just hype on how to be a great player. Dragondoor is a rip -off factory. NOT RECOMMENDED
For experienced weight trainers     On: 2004-10-05

I have played football very competively in both high school and college and can tell you that the fooundation that Davies lays out in his book produces better results than any other workout I have seen. There are some problems with the book however. First, as everyone has stated, there is no scheduled training guideline, this requires the reader to formulate their own. Thankfully I was very experienced and could do so with no problem. But I know that not everyone else is. Another problem with the book is that Davies has no emphasis whatsoever on gaining size. And yes, ask anyone who played real football and they will tell you that speed and then size are the two most important things (acceleration x mass= force). Davies has few if any exercises for developing much mass and even alludes to size slowing one down. Big mistake for anyone who wants to play a high level of football. It is few and far in between when someone has so much muscle that they are slowed down by it, look at the professionals. So again I had to go back and address that problem as well. Lastly, these exercises are not easy to accomplish. Many require considerable experience on how to perform the lifts, though Davies does a decent job with the pictures of showing you how to perform them. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with enough experience to formulate their own routine, if not it will only give you insight into some new lifts.
Picture book     On: 2004-09-22

This book is a collection of exercises and drills you can do to train for football. Its just a bunch of pictures with descriptions. There is no guidance on how to sequence your training. Dissapointed.
This Is For You     On: 2004-02-13

This is the best training book youll find anywhere. The ideas of Coach Davies are amazing. I doesnt discriminate whether your young old weak strong fast or slow. If you want to improve in the sport of football this book is for you.
Renegade Training for Football: The Ultimate Guide to Develo     On: 2003-11-29

I have just finished Renegade Training. It is by far the
most comprehensive training book that I
>have read since I became a performance coach 3 years ago.
Your concepts are very straight forward
>and motivating. Thanks!
Take a second look     On: 2003-08-12

At its face this book seems to be a collection of random drills that can be successfully used in football conditioning.

As I read and re read this book I truly came to understand its value. If you sit down and take notes you will come to see a blueprint of success which has stood the test of time. The initial disappointment turns to enthusiasm.

The most frequent complaint is that Davies does not show how to construct a comprehensive program. If you can get past the pictures (there are a lot of them... thats good) you will see that Davies clearly lays out what drills to do on which days. As you lay this out on a weekly/monthly template you will see that this plan can be adapted to any level athlete and produce exceptional results

Coach Davies is the Man!     On: 2003-07-21

What more can i say? This book covers all aspects of Coach Davies wheel of conditioning. Coach Davies has single-handedly revolutionized the way I think of training.
Not What I Expected
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-07-18

Ive heard nothing but great things about Coach Davies, and figured anybody hired by more than one NFL team to consult regarding their strength and conditioning programs certainly knows what theyre doing. While Im sure Coach Davies does know what hes doing, this book isnt the comprehensive guide to physical training that I thought it would be. Its more of a list of exercises and drills, which seem very useful... but without being put in the context of an overall approach to training, really didnt provide much benefit for me.

A book that did provide EVERYTHING I was looking for is "A Chance to Win" by Coach Mike Gentry. I cant speak highly enough about this book. It provided everything from the basic physiology, concepts about training cycles, different objectives during different points in the season, nutrition, motivation, etc. It also provides the requisite exercises and drills for strength, power, speed and agility development; and most importantly (for me) it provides loads of detailed, day-by-day, very specific sample training routines that combine everything for you. You want a sample workout for an advanced skill position player during the offseason? Its got a day-by-day 18 week program laid out for you. This book is comprehensive. Now, Im a regular guy... just looking to get more out of going to gym... and this book has been fantastic. Ive noticed real gains, and more importanly my knowledge about what Im doing and why has increased dramatically. I cant recommend Coach Gentrys book enough.

Not what was expected.
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-07-04

When ordering this book, I thought that it would be a comprehensive guide to football training, with sample schedules, routines, etc. Instead, its mostly photos of exercises with weights, agility drills, and flexibility drills.

I would not recommend this if you are looking for a complete football training guide. It may be good if you want a few different exercises to try, but I find it hard to believe that most football coaches dont know these drills already.

Great book, but I expected more . . .     On: 2003-04-15

I have the same general complaint that many others did. This book is fantastic as a list of training movements, but there is no explanation of training methodology or procedure at all. Ive got listings of most of the movements presented in this book in several other books I own already. I was really hoping that Davies would delve more into what factors he considers when designing routines rather than just the movements he uses. If youre a football coach looking to add some spice to your drills, get this book. If youre looking for theory on how to train a football player, youre not going to find it here unfortunately. As a big fan of Coach Davies Renegade routines, I was really hoping for more insight into the brilliant design and I would certainly say I was disappointed when I didnt get it.
A review by an average Joe     On: 2002-12-12

Okay, Im not a football player, or a football coach. Im a guy who wanted a book about training. Football players are some of the best conditioned athletes - even if some of them dont look like it. Im a regular guy who wants to be in good shape. So from that perspective:

The Good: There are many exercises to improve your agility, strength, and power. Things that can benefit anyone of any sport or sportless background.

The Bad: As someone else said, there is no guidance. In general, there is no mention of amounts of sets, reps, or how often. No recommended routines or schedules. Just an explanation of how to do the exercises and drills.

That being said, this book does serve as an "idea book" so I can incorporate new things into my workouts. If you are looking for a book with a collection of interesting exercises (though someone may say some of them are not practical) and can deal with the lack of guidance, get this if you are willing to pay the high price. ...

Exercises Not Training
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-09-18

This book promises a lot, but doesnt deliver. Its simply a compilation of exercises. Most seem reasonable and useful, but it makes this a picture book and not a training book. While exercises for the various aspects of football are provided there are no routines or program recommendations. For example in the strength training section there is no discussion of reps, sets, % max, etc. On static stretching there is no discussion of how long to hold or how many sets to do. The same applies throughout the book except for the skipping rope section. In other words, other then talk about how hard his program is, Coach Davies doesnt provide a clue as to what it is. There are much better references for training. Save your money, there isnt anything here other then pictures.
I was disappointed!!     On: 2002-08-06

I have been SO excited about this book, I have been waiting for about 2 weeks to receive it and today I finally received it.

The book promised so much and I expected a really indepth book of Renegade Training principles and experiences from this top strength coach. I was really looking forward to diving into a really meaty book of profound insights, with a couple of recommended exercises.

To my disappointment, this book has little-to-no meat at all, it has a lot of great exercises and descriptions of how to do them with pictures, but that is it. IT IS A PICTURE BOOK!!
I was expecting a LOT more reasoning and discussion around the Renegade Training Philosophy, and that is not there.

So, in conclusion, if you want a book with some absolutely brilliant exercises and how-tos of those exercises, then this book is BRILLIANT, but if you are like me, and you want a book with a lot of discussion and reasoning behind the exercises and experiences from his strength training career, then this is unfortunately NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU!!

Outstanding!     On: 2002-07-31

Wow, what can I say. Coach Davies has done such a great job with this book. This book is jammed packed with great exercises for all areas of training: stretching, range of moiton, agility drills, speed drills, explosive strength drills, general physical preparartion....no training stone is left unturned. The book is full of illustrations of each exercise and drill so there is no misunderstandings.

A great book by a great man. If you want the secrets to incredible strength, agility, flexibility, speed, and endurance, look no further. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up today!

This is THE guide.     On: 2002-07-29

Coach Davies "Renegade Training For Football" is an excellent blueprint for training athletes (not just football players.) Coach Davies outlines step by step, in a concise manner, how to perform the drills and exercises that will maximize athletic potential. There is no fluff, just good solid, proven methods. Following the protocol in "Renegade Training" will develop and hone the tools that all athletes require: speed, agility, quickness, flexibility, power and strength. To become the total package follow the teachings in this book and watch game performance skyrocket. All coaches owe a debt of gratitude to Coach Davies for sharing his insights and methods.
Unbelievable!!!
by: Anonymous    On: 2002-07-17

This book is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. It is absolutely a one of a kind reference and inspirational book. Coach Davies approach to training is absolutely phenomenal. The pictures are a must see for yourself!!! I recommend this book to not only athletes, but to anyone wishing to learn the secrets of many athletes. Cant wait to read more from Coach Davies.
Coach Davies     On: 2002-07-16

We are having great success implementing Coach Davies ideas into our summer strength and conditioning camps. If your goals are to develop maximal speed, acceleration, power, explosive strength, agility, flexability, body awareness and good, old fashioned mental and physical toughness then this is the book for you.

Training for "Football"     On: 2002-07-15

Coach Davies book focuses what will make you a better football player; not weightlifter, bodybuilder, track star etc... Our athletes have made incredible progress in speed, explosive strength, agility, flexability, quickness, physical & mental toughness and body awareness. This book is a must for anyone who coaches or plays football.

THE book for Hardcore Sports Training.     On: 2002-07-15

After hearing a little about Coach Davies and his "Renegade" training for football, I decided to do a bit of research. The more I read, the more I was liked.
Coach Davies knows his stuff. His no hype approach to it all is very refreshing. But this book is not all about the exercises, it shows you how to adapt it to you, by using the Renegade creed. It shows that its not just the exercises, but also the mental state that is required to succeed.

This book is not about taking it easy. The Renegade way is hardcore to the extreme. Coach Davies asks you to do more than you ever imagined. But do you want to increase your skill base for football (or any sport), or do you just want a book to sit on your shelf. If you buy this book, use the book and the exercises, and you will never regret it (Except perhaps after every workout!)

Coach Davies spells out every exercise with full pictures, and makes it simple enough, even us Linemen can understand it.

His book is not about how "genetic freaks" or "gifted athletes" should train. His book is for those who are determined to succeed, no matter what.

A major part of Coach Davies book is based on Integrity, Drive, Commitment and Discipline.

This book should be the cornerstone to any skills and conditioning guide for sport at any level. It is optimised for football, but I have no doubt that all athletes could benefit from this. Run faster, Jump Higher, and Learn.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in working hard to improve themselves. Do yourself a favour and buy this one!

To Quote the last line of the book
"Take Control of your Destiny. Seize and Crush every limitation before you".

Renegade Training for Football     On: 2002-07-14

Coach Davies has spelled out a very effective program covering every and all areas any football coach could use. Very specific, with east to understand explanations and diagrams. Very useful for coaches and athletes alike. I think its underpriced.
Where was this books when I first started training?     On: 2002-07-13

Sometimes I get excited about a new book. However, most of the time the book(s) does not live up to my expectations and I am left disappointed. Fortunately, that is not the case with Coach Davies new book. This is the most comprehensive book that I have ever seen on strength and conditioning. Coach Davies covers everything from olympic lifting, to kettlebell lifting, to stretching, and a whole lot more! Moreover, there are literally hundreds of pictures that show clearly how to do every exercise in the book. If you are a serious athlete or Coach, you need to have this book in your arsenal.
A choice for those without choices!     On: 2002-07-13

When Victory is the only option you will know why you bought this book. I have trained 12 year olds as well as professionals with this simple, aggressive, scientifically proven approach to power and speed development. I think every one in the game should study Renegades techniques but if you dont, my athletes and I wont mind beating you at all.
Excellent for many sports, not just football     On: 2002-06-28

Coach Davis program is a real deal. Straightforward, low tech, and powerful. I especially liked the unique lateral drills and squat variations. I strongly recommend Renegade Training to athletes from most power sports.
