I enjoyed this "Book" very much, because like its author, it is original, clever, thought-out and at times even very funny. But its not a joke book nor is it a biography. The best way to describe Whoops book is "the wit, wisdom, whimsy and wizardry of the one and only Whoopi." (Thats a lot of ws.) Although the book is very short (youll probably finish it within 1 or 2 sittings) this reader got a definite impression of who Whoopi is and was and wants to be. "The Book" is always honest and always blatant and thats probably why so many love Whoopi. Sprinkled throughout the text are stories, anecdotes and other subtle attention grabbers. Over the last 3 decades Whoopi has been a great many things to a great many people. She has been a movie star, a stage actress, a radio DJ, a comedienne, a songstress, a humanitarian, a talk show host, a television star, an emcee, a catalyst, a lightening rod and a woman. Now she can add author to her never-ending list of hat-wearing responsibilities. On: 2007-11-19
Ok, I was into this book, I really was! Whoopi has a humorous point of view on a lot of different topics. I had to keep in mind that the book was written in 1998, but besides that it started out pretty good...then I kept reading, and reading, and reading the same thing over and over and over again.
I got a bit more than halfway through before getting really sick of her whining and complaining and just put the book down. If I want to hear whining Ill go tease my dog. On: 2007-07-15
I pick up this book and re- read the first chapter! I have never actually lol (laUGHED OUT LOUD) WHEN READING TO MYSELF UNTILL THIS BOOK CAME ALONG. wHOOP IS A FAVORITE OF MINE AND book IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF WHY THIS COMEDIAN IS STILL POPULAR AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
I still havent made it all the way through this book- not a good sign- but that first chapter is worth the entire price of the book! On: 2006-09-16
"THE IDEA OF eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts in this country sends a chill down my spine and a bug up my butt. As I write this, theres a proposal kicking around to cut the NEA budget down from an already-slashed $[...] million all the way down to $[...] million...."
I reeally love Whoopi Goldberg.
I was delighted to hear more from Whoopi and this book did not disappoint me. I loved hearing about her family experiences and Christmas was really great too, heart-warming and how she duplicates their own familys idiosyncrasies to the T each year. On: 2006-02-13
This book is the funniest book I have read in years! If you can apprecaite Whoopies raw honesty, this book is for you. This wise women inspires "all" people to..."keep it real". Enjoy and stay near the toilet. You will laugh so hard youll have to pee. :) On: 2005-12-07
Whoopi shares her views on life and gets down to the nitty gritty of things, including bodily functions. The writing perfectly captures her tone and her voice. She sounds amazingly serious and straight-faced when she discusses farting, something that no movie star of her stature would dare discuss, but Whoopi tackles the topic with her usual aplomb and humor. Personally, I would like Whoopi to write a more extensive autobiography so we could learn more about her life and her struggle as a single welfare mother, and how she made it to the top in backstabbing, "Beautiful People" Hollywood. She must have an interesting life story to tell. This book only gives you a peek into the woman behind Whoopi, as its very short but entertaining, especially if youre a Whoopi fan. On: 2005-07-12
I suppose that Im going to appear as an old, old grouch, but thats something that Im just going to have to accept. I was lent this book (thank heavens that I didnt buy it) and accepted it, thinking that it would be full of funny and witty comments from a very talented actress and writer. It consists of very short chapters, each on a different subject, but most of which are concerned with bodily functions. If you are fascinated by reading chapters on urinating (and why men have wet spots on the front of their trousers), pooing, farting, masturbating and all the other usually private functions, then this is your kind of book. On the other hand, if, like me, you prefer to read something a bit more entertaining, dont bother with this book. Ok, perhaps Im old fashioned, but there are some things that Id rather keep private and dont find any humour in the kind of wee and poo jokes that traditionally have 5 year old boys rolling in the aisles. this book is so funny. pick this book up when you need a good laugh. its a great stress reliever book. absolutely wonderful. i love her bluntness and just how she approaches life, its very inspiring. On: 2005-01-25
Buy it now, she talks about all the things we think about but dare not discuss.Good easy read, very amusing, you gotta love her! On: 2004-03-31
I was laughing so much that people on the train were staring at me. If you like Whoopi, you will like this book. There are serious parts to it but it was trully her. Granted I do know a couple things about her now that I could have gone my whole life without knowing but, it was a great read. On: 2004-03-28
Ive always been a huge Whoopi fan, and Ive always thought she was amazingly funny. When I first saw this book, I had to pick it up. I flipped to the back cover to see what it was all about and ended up laughing myself all the way from the bookshelf to the checkout line and then to my car. As I attempted to read the back cover to all my friends at work, none of us could contain ourselves...this book is absolutely hilarious! Ive read it twice, and I have two copies! Ive bought it for friends as gifts, and no one has a bad word about it. The book is contagious; once you start, you cant stop, and youll get your friends wanting to read it to. Go head, pick it up...yeah, you. The one reading this review! You know you want to read it. Give it a shot, you wont regret it! On: 2003-09-17
Seriously this book makes you wonder why Whoopi isnt joining "Ahnold" at the polls! Its basically just her espousal of liberal politics. Which dont get me wrong, I agreed with her on everything and of course it was delivered with her comedic wit. But thats really all this book is. Its not that autobiographical, it really doesnt make a solid point. Its just a collection of Whoopis various opinions on various hot topics. My only real "problem" with the book is that instead of trying to make a valid point, instead of trying to change things with her opinion it seems like shes just whining alot. I mean she may be a celebrity but mulling over your opinions in a book isnt gonna get anything done. So I say run for governor, girlfriend! On: 2003-08-01
I was looking for something a little kinkier. On: 2003-04-23
Past reviews have called BOOK over the top, which it is. Her views outrageous... to some they might be. Liberal? Of course. I agree with all of her opinions; I am extremely proud to be called a Liberal and Im pretty sure Whoopi is too.Im Catholic but her opinions of the popes, both past and present, are totally on the mark and not offensive to anyone who has any awareness of whats going on in Rome. Read with an open mind. Whether you agree or not, Ms. Goldbergs opinions will freshen up your thoughts on a lot of subjects. It does ramble on like one of her stand-up monologues, which is what I love so much about it. I also recommend the audiobook version so you can hear Whoopi reading her own words. This is not high literature, I admit. But it is fresh and humorous and one of my all-time fun reads. I even named my web site after her cute name for a fart. Tree Monkey . Net On: 2003-03-26
Whoopi Goldberg, an exceptionally talented actor and comedian, should be commended for putting her humor in words for her debut book, cleverly titled "Book." Goldberg tackles issues as seemingly mundane as using the bathroom to more serious issues as the love of a family member, while conveying a sense of personality and humor quite effectively. Although each chapter is hilarious in its own right, the excessively large print and skipping of pages between chapters, while seemingly unimportant, makes it seem as though "Book" is trying to be more substantial than it really is. On: 2002-08-24
I bought this book thinking, "Funny lady, funny book." I was all wrong. This book was poorly written, rambling like a bad monologue. While everyone is entitled to there opinions, some of Whoopis were blatantly over the top, out of line, and offensive. Apparently, that is what they were going for, and it just didnt work. On: 2002-02-09
Whoopi Goldberg has managed to write one of the worst books of all time. All she does throughout is spout her liberal messages off like we should all believe this nonsense, and throws in every four-letter word she can think of for emphasis on her already off-the-wall ideas. And if you are Catholic then you will be extremly offended by her comments on the Pope. Do not buy this book under any circumstances! Please dont waste your money like I did. On: 2001-05-31
...Whoopi does not surprise me with herwords of wisdom (nor profanity) inthis "Book", only assures me that shewill always be there to remind us thatour lifes are truly a part of yesterday. I appreciated her openness and attentative humor on such subjects;as projected :).We must be able to see where weve comefrom in "color", not in the closed doorversions of the past, in order to goforward."I SALUTE YOU" Ms. Whoopi Goldberg for your Foregoing visions of our pasts.Your "Book" is a great read! On: 2001-03-15
A lot of people may be offended by Whoopis statements as far as religion, sex, and bodily functions goes, but, if anybody has seen her act on cable tv, then they knew how she felt about certain subjects and was not going to bite her tongue about them. Taking that into account, I got almost exactly what I expected from this book. I use almost because certain statements shocked even me, and some made me cringe a little, but considering the source, did I expect anything different? Not at all. She remained true to what she believes and she placed it in a forum where all who can deal with the context can read about it. Good for you, Whoopi! On: 2000-12-10
Well as usual Whoopi Goldberg is being herself, the book was full of laughs and quiet entertaining. Whoopi Goldberg is successful in both as a comedian and a writer, and shes not afraid to say her opinion on various things, good work. On: 2000-11-07
I think that Whoopi has the talent to be very, very funny. Unfortunately, a combination of prejudices and trying too darn hard ruin this book as an amusing volume. She makes statements in it that are, quite simply, offensive and uncalled-for. In addition (less importantly, but still important) she seems to dive past actual funniness and devote pages and pages to vulgar observations that rarely afflict people other than herself. Profanity tossed in for its own sake isnt funny. Neither are candid descriptions of the disgusting bathroom habits of ones mate. Its never a good idea to do something like that--Dave Barry, the king of humor writers, never descends to this level of juvenility because it IS NOT funny, choosing to rely on wryness and exaggeration instead. Unfortunately, Ms. Goldberg seems unable to see that. On: 2000-08-04
whoopie is one of my favourite actresses and comediennes. shes got a very blunt attitude about life, and doesnt have any problem telling you how it is. this book covers all kinds of topics from farts, to sex. youll even find out why her nickname/name is whoopie :) again, another book written as if she is standing there talking to you, so dont expect perfect grammar, or sometimes even for it to flow like a novel, because thats not what its about. its about her telling stories, and telling you her opinions and thoughts on things about our lives.....thats what makes it so much fun, to see what shes thinking, and what makes her such a funny person.... On: 1999-09-07
She has nothing of significance to say, and its not funny at all. She has substituted vulgarity for humor and she just rambles on about the most inane topics. On: 1999-06-07
This book was about Whoopi Goldbergs opinion on various things. It was non-fiction. Though I agreed with many of the ideas presented in this book, I found it to be adolescent. Whoopi was trying too hard to be down to earth and frankly, ended up sounding juvenile. I like her, I think she has the ability to see things others do not, but I think this book was dumb and beneath her intelligence and wit. On: 1999-04-13
I laughed, I cried , I got goosebumps over and over again. Her down to earth words made so much sense. I picked this book up on a whim, because I thought I could probably get a few laughs on my lunch hour. I was not prepared for the way it made me feel. My emotions ran the gamut. Thank you Whoopi, for putting it all into perspective. Everything that I have been feeling for so long, but could never find the voice. Definetly a must read!!!!! On: 1999-02-02
This book is the most greatfull book I ever read! I wanna say, Whoopi, that even you`re a great actress, you`re a great writer! Many thanks for make me have a good humor on this. Congratulations again!!!!! On: 1999-01-11
I read this book and I enjoyed it! I read it in 2 days! I couldnt put it down. It was one of those books that you wanted to read all the way through. Its funny and thought-provoking and it tells-it-like-it-is. I read the other reviewers comments of the book and I just have to say, what were you expecting? Were you expecting some time-altering novel?! Its Whoopi! Its good. BUY THE BOOK. On: 1998-12-23
I read this book in one day while flying from Washington DC to Boston. It made me laugh and think about the world we live in. Whoopi please write another book! I so enjoyed this one! The Wind chapter is the best! On: 1998-12-15
I enjoyed this book immensely and glad to see it not ghosted (or spooked) so much that it lost the best part of Whoopi. Shes a tell it like it is person and this book reflects that. Good job, Whoopi!! On: 1998-12-05
Whoopies comment against Pope John Paul II is so hateful and obscene that it defies all decency and shows what really motivates her. On: 1998-11-12
I read this book on the plane, on my way to VA. I laughed all the way. I needed some intertainment because the flights are so boring. Thanks Whoopi, I hope you write another book. On: 1998-10-17
The frequent use of swearwords is what annoyed me the most during my highly anticipated read. Profanity just does not look attractive on paper, its so unappealing. Most importantly, I hardly found any good humor in it. I felt totally comically unrelieved. There goes my hero. The title of the book explains what it actually is, just another book, nothing more or less. On: 1998-10-07
This woman should not be allowed anywhere near blank paper again after the crimes against humanity she has committed. I refer of course to her drivel entitled, Book. This woman should stick to trying to make us laugh instead of inflicting this kind of nonsense upon us. On: 1998-10-07
Whoopi Goldberg, like so many comedians, apparently thinks that the so-called dirty words are funny, per se, in whatever context. In this case, they simply arent amusing, except to the snickering adolescent. She is a fine actress, and I have laughed at some of her wit in stand-up routines. Perhaps something goes out of them when reduced to paper and read by someone who is cold sober. Ultimately humor has to have something to say about the human condition, and she doesnt have much to say that is beyond a perfect grasp of the obvious. That is sad. On: 1998-06-17
I knew what to expect out of this book, and it was an excellenet book at that. For all stupid people who were disappointed, what did you expect to find? Think about it. On: 1998-05-22
I think I mustve bought a different Book to the one reviewed by others readers here! I read the reviews before I actually read the book and so was pleasantly surprised by how great it actually is. I found Whoopis description of how she spent Christmas with her mum and brother, and how the rituals remain with her as an adult extremely moving and similar to my own memories. As a cyclist, I back her all the way on the bad habits of people who drive, and it was refreshing to read such honest and sensible views around political correctness etc. Im probably biased because I love Whoopi and her work to death, but for me, Im looking forward to a sequel- assisted or not! On: 1998-03-09
Book is a modern work of art. It is a powerful tour-de-force of an "American" woman who went from Rags to Riches. It usually takes me a week to read a book, but this book was so good I read it over a weekend! The book was very intriguing and thought-provoking. I agree with all of Whoopis pet-peeves, but disagree with her stereotype of different races. This book kept me and my brother laughing for weeks. Get yourself a copy, its a book not worth missing. On: 1998-02-27
This is by far the biggest waste of trees. That this book made it to the NYT Best seller list is the surest sign the the end of civilization is near. Garbage. On: 1998-02-02
I was extremely excited to buy this book, that is until I read it. Whoopi rambles too much and some of her sterotype comments are just plain stupid. I have truely lost some of my respect for her now that I have read this book. On: 1998-01-22
I was extremely anxious to read this book but was disappointed when I finally did. Perhaps I was expecting too much but most of the book seemed to be rehashed from interviews, articles and monologues. I was expecting to be illuminated or something. Im still a diehard Whoopi fan but will probably wait until the next book comes out in paperback! On: 1997-12-31
This book was very well written.Whoopi address some unusual issues, and yet she does it in a very funny way. I can honestly say that I laughed through out the whole book. On: 1997-12-18
Only from Whoopi would you expect a book entitled Book. Her to the point and sometimes raw style jumps right from the pages. It is filled with some of her most cherished views on life, sex and being American (not African American). Whether you love Whoopi or hate her, this book probably wont change your mind either way. Youve heard some of the quips before ... others might raise your eyebrows quite high ... really, really high. On: 1997-12-17

Wow. After reading all the previous reviews, I guess you either love or hate this book. I thought it was one of the better books in the comedian-as-author genre. I could have done without quite so much toilet humor, but hey, shes a comedian, thats what they do. She wasnt trying to write the Great American Novel here. The fact that she used a ghost writer didnt bother me at all. I didnt know she had until she said so at the end of the book. The book sounded like Whoopi to me. If she needed someones help in organizing it into a viable manuscript, so what? And as much as it pains me to say it, I have to agree with Entertainment Weekly. Whoopi, please consider writing your autobiography. On: 1997-10-24
I read this book in just a few hours and I laughed the whole time. It was a funny, sort of brutally honest look at life as she sees it. Its not meant to be this majorly serious novel as I see some people are reviewing it as...it reads like it was written for fun. It brightened my day because it made me look lightly at my life and the lives of everyone around me. I find Whoopis writing entertaining because almost everything she talks about has happened, at least in part, to me. For the first time in a long time I found a funny, hard-to-put-down book...I highly recommend it!! On: 1997-10-20
Whoopi is such an inteligant woman that it is hard to believe that this crap was written by her. I understand many celebrities hire ghost-writers to do their books but I didnt know third graders were so employed. On: 1997-10-20
I was reading this book on a flight from New York to Los Angeles and the flight attendants had a hard time preventing me from opening the hatch and throwing this out the door. I would reccomend pornography before I ever recommend this book. For the love of God, dont do this to yourself! On: 1997-10-15
This book is so bad it defies description. I was amazed how poorly written and nonsensical it is. While I agree with many of her opinions, I lost alot of respect for her from the poor quality of this book. On: 1997-10-10
This book is terrible. I honestly expected some thoughtful yet humorous insight into the mind of this great comedic actress. Nothing of the sort. It is poorly written, it rambles and drifts from one issue to the next with no real destination. She tells you what she thinks of the world but not why she feels that way. Please dont waste your time on this book. It is a waste of money but more importantly, it is a waste of time. On: 1997-10-10
Whoopis book is outstanding. It made me think about things that were always in the back of my mind. God bless her. I plan to buy a copy for my Father. JOHN FAIR, SWITZERLAND On: 1997-10-08
I really thought I was buying a humor book--boy was I wrong. Someone apparently told Whoppi that her thoughts, feelings, and philosophies on all things banal were of general interest. Wrong, wrong, wrong. How about an occasional funny line from a funny lady? On: 1997-10-04
In this thought-provoking, deeply moving, and riotously funny book, Whoopi Goldberg has finally appeared in the vehicle that will demonstrate to the masses the full extent of her genius -- not just as a comedian, but as a sociologist and philosopher. She says the things we all think but are afraid to say, and she thinks the things we all should think. And with her unique ability to make her audience laugh, cry and reflect all at the same time, she has the power to inspire action and change. The world is a better place because Whoopi is in it. And if a fraction of the people who will make this book the bestseller it will be (and DESERVES to be) are in fact inspired to become the people Whoopi lets us know we all can and should be, the world will be a FAR better place.
