David Beckham
by: Anonymous    On: 2007-10-09

This book is a great book if you are a soccer fan. If your not it will still change the way you look at sports stars forever!
This book talks about David Beckham inside and out. It makes you realize how many people take the sport called soccer (football) so seriously and how that can affect a player. It makes you see David as a different person. You see past the reputation and greatness of this wonderful man. It makes you look at him as a person like you and me. He is very humble as he tells his story. You realize how much respect he has for other stars such has Michel Jordan, Ronaldo, Zidane and more.
He talks about his life in soccer and his life outside of soccer. Sometimes I got a little confused because he would go back and forth a little bit but it makes sense if you keep reading. He talks about all the important games and all the games that meant something to him personally. It is amazing how much he remembers from his career at Man U and Real Madrid. He mentions at least 4 games a chapter if not more. I loved that because I love soccer and hearing about what happened.
He talks about his childhood and how much he was committed to playing. The long nights with his dad in the park and then going to watch his dad play soccer with his friends and how he was so happy when he got to play with them, about how he always liked to play against the older kids for a challenge. How the Ridge Way Rovers, his childhood team and his dad and his coaches made him the player that he is today.
He talks about all his time with Man U. He talks about his time with the child development team, how he struggled to get a starting position in the first team when his friends were already starting regularly. How he scored his amazing goal from half field to make people start realizing him. He talks about locker room and the attitude and faces of players and coaches before and after the game.
He talks about his time at England, how he got a red card in France 98 and the reaction he got when he came home to England. He talks about what it means to captain his nation (England).
He talks about his first season with Real Madrid and how that affected him as a player and how different the culture is from his.
He talks about his family, about how much he loves them and how much they mean to him and about all the special moment hes had with them.
Last but not least he talks about the press and paparazzi, how they helped him and how they killed him and his family.
This amazing book will change the way you look at famous people and the way you look at yourself as a person.
A great/Fast Read...     On: 2007-09-10

A great read. David really talks in depth about his early roots in football.

Short and sweet - if you want to know about the world best soccer players....read his autobiography!
Great insight to the world's most well-known athelete     On: 2006-03-13

The life of David Beckham is often splashed across the tabloids and may or may not be the truth. In this honest autobiography, Mr Beckham details beginning as a boy with a passion for soccer, meeting the girl of his dreams, his role as proud father, and his triumphs and defeats playing for Manchester United and now for Real Madrid. Readers not avid fans of soccer will also find this memoir inspiring.

King Of Marketing!
by: carmarthen    On: 2005-12-21

It has been many years since this guy stopped worrying about playing soccer, and focused solely in his obligations with sponsors, in posing for photos, etc. He has won absolutely nothing in Real Madrid, a team so engulfed by its millionaire stars that no coach can make it work as an efficient soccer team.

Its useless to read a book about this narcisist guy.
Decent book, extraordinary story     On: 2005-05-02

i went into this book a tad reluctant...i thought beckham was a showboat, spoilt brat...and so forth. "both feet on the ground" has enlightened me a little bit but some steretypes remain.
its a decent bordering good book, davids early life, which is quite intresting to read, his intro to man utd, and his exit....it has a LOT of info on his exit and the months leading up to it.
i guess what really makes this book average is that david basically talks about himself....an autobiography you might say....yet if anyones ever read peles book "my life and the beautiful game" youll realise what im talking about. peles book is extraordinary, a marvel, a must read in my opinion...the true rags to riches story. a story about a boy who becomes a man and yet never forgets the humility that he started with.
davids book on the other hand is just about the opposite...many may say that it is a smaller or inferior story of rags to riches, but he doesnt display the humility...he claims hes shy, yet is VERY angry at being put on the substitute bench for manchester united!!!! one of the biggest clubs in the world, some people would kill to just be on their reserves...this guy says hes too good, he says he thinks he is one of man utds best 11. i dont belive in being too good or being the best that you cant sit on the bench an odd game....i guess what im saying is that david has a remarkable story, scape goat for englands 1998 world cup exit to englands captain for the 2002 finals, but he lacks humility, too much pride i guess. he talks a lot about his wife victoria...a lot more about her legs....a whole lot more about her legs!!! and how he wooed her. and driving a fancy car to dates and so forth.
anyway, about the book, i feel he misses a lot....he doesnt say much about his team mates, like jaap stam, ole gunnar soljaer, or the retirement of eric cantona.
his co author Tom Watt has a football, soccer background so a lot of what david feels comes out in the book. i myself think they robbed the book of lot of enjoyment by trying to please american audiences, although the more young kids who read this the better. davids done a heap in his life and his achievments alone make him a suitable role model. but my point being that putting in phrases that like soccer, trapping the ball, exhibition game and such, kind of take the spice out of it, it feels a little forced.
to end ill say, it is much easier for me to nit-pick and critisize "both feet on the ground" it is much harder to do what beckham has done, to overcome the hurdles he has, and to put your soul out in a book, so in a way it is unfair for me to critisize beckham. his life is an achievment of such magnitude that is incomprehensible. if you want to read this book to gain inspiration, then it might not be the one, peles definetly is. but if you want to read this book to know more about david becham and his life, his story, then this is definetly the book for you.
i feel "both feet on the ground" might not be an appopriate title. maybe just beckham, "my life, my world"
The book of the year!!     On: 2005-04-12

This book was totally awesome! I knew quite a lot about him and the football (soccer) that he played but I never knew how much of a family guy that he was. The chapters were sort of long, but I never felt bored reading this book, I always found myself wanting to read more and more. Towards the end of the book he talked about his move to Real Madrid a spanish soccer club, that has got to be one of the hardest things to do because Manchester United was where his home was and to move clubs like that is hard on anyone. The pictures were amazing, he has gone through quite a lot in his career and I hope that he has enough in him to keep going for a long time. I would stronly recommend this book who is looking for a good and honest role model in their life, David Beckham would be a great choice for one.
Couldn't put down     On: 2005-01-23

Of course, I am a big fan of Beckham and soccer itself, but the book is great for anyone to read. In the begininning when he talks about his childhood, I have to say I did get a bit confused at times. I also found it hard to keep track of all the names and people in the book, but it didnt keep me from understanding the story. Before reading this book, I even viewed Beckham as a model who can sometimes play football. And, you realize that what the media says about Beckham, whether about his marriage or whatever, isnt really true. I know have a greater respect for David Beckham, along with all the other great soccer players. I definetly reccomend this book to anyone who is a fan of soccer, whether you like Beckham or not.
Bullcrap     On: 2004-11-30

As his life is most of his book is about anything but football. you will find most of his book telling you how beautifull his wife is and how much each of her dresses cost and how beautifull they are.
Sir Alex was right to kick him out of the club, he is nothing but a spoiled brat.
It was total waste of time, Dont waste yours.
(read fergies autobiography. great book!)

Surprisingly Candid Commentary From An Image Conscious Star     On: 2004-09-18

David Beckham is one of the most famous international athletes of our times. His hairstyles and tattoos are as well-known and emulated as his trademark bending free kicks. He sells more replica shirts than any other footballer, and is probably the most media covered player of his generation.

What impressed me about this book was the candor of the author. His diction and tone were not one of a media and marketing savvy "product" that we have witnessed in various mediums. He seemed like an ordinary guy, from modest beginnings, who honed his skills for hours upon hours to become a top player. He does not appear to have forgotten his roots, or his childhood passion for the sport. That he married a famous woman, or has become a global marketing vehicle, seems secondary. David Beckham, who was vilified after his red card sending off against Argentina in 1998, resurrected himself four years later against the same opponent. And then returned to icon status in his native England.

David Beckham was a product of the Manchester United youth system. With the exception of a short period on loan to Preston North End, he spent his entire British career playing for legendary coach, Sir Alex Ferguson, at Manchester United. The book discusses his childhood training, along with the fact that famous people in the sport recognized his prodigious talents at a young age.

He discusses his relationships with fellow teammates, some of whom he had known from his early years. For a world superstar, he understands the importance of being a team player. His love of England is demonstrated by his steadfast devotion to its captaincy. One senses that Beckham would tattoo the England captains band on his arm if he could. For him, it is more than just a piece of cloth.

I was impressed by his devotion to family, along with his desire to raise his children away from the media spotlight that follows him incessantly. His well-publicized falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson appeared to be a seminal event. He had played for the famous coach for over a decade, and perhaps the row was needed for Beckham to realize his true potential. He now wears the famous white shirt of Real Madrid, another club with a rich history and several other famous "galacticos" (as the stars are called on the Madrid team.)

He may be one of the most highly compensated players in his sport. But I sense, even with his global media appeal, that deep down, David Beckham is still the young boy who wore a Tottenham Hotspurs kit (uniform) to his first Manchester United youth training session. When he takes the field for England or Real Madrid, few supporters would ask for their money back. He leaves it all on the pitch. And there are not too many in the world today that can "bend it" like David Beckham. :-)

Thank you for the opportunity to review this interesting autobiography.

Awesome insight into the man behind the image!     On: 2004-07-27

Excellent book! Provides a raw insight into a player often misunderstood. By the end of the book you see him in a new light, his values, his insecurities, and his moments of success.

His story shows why Manchester United and Alex Ferguson are so good at what they do. After also reading Japp Stams book, it makes clear what happens at that club if you cross the line.

A Page turner!     On: 2004-07-19

I got this book because I thought it would be a fun light read. Once I started page one I couldnt put it down! I spent hours reading it! When it was over I was actually sad, because I wanted more. Before this book I liked Beckham, but now I have sooooo much more respect for him. Its nice to see a professional athlete who can write a great book. You gotta read this!
Beckham - both feet on the ground     On: 2004-01-26

This is a much better book than I expected. It is an easy and interesting read. I am almost ten years older than David Beckham, but I wanted to find out what he is really like (other than what is seen on the soccer field). He does a good job of telling his own story without blowing anything out of proportion. If you like soccer, this is a must read. Enjoy...
Excellent!     On: 2003-12-16

Beckham is gorgeous and a superb soccer player, but when you read this book, youll get to know what a great person he is, and youll love him even more!
beckham demythologized
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-12-10

This is a must-read for true Beckham fans or any fan of Man United. Becks has long been adored by Man United fans and the book shows us why. Although the beginning started a little slow, the reader can learn a whole lot about the backgrounds that created the man Beckham as we see him now.

Beckhams writing style can sometimes move in a direct address to the readers which some readers may find annoying. However, this just adds to an all-too-human portrait of the star himself. In this book, you will find out many things which are completely opposite of the British media depiction. Is this book a spin as a counter to the media? I doubt it. Rather, it peels away the myth surrounding Becks (and even Posh).

If you are curious as to why Beckham chose Real Madrid, how he felt after the recent two World Cup exits, what playing inside Old Trafford is like and many other Beckham issues, this is the book to get.

The Best

Excellent autobiography even if you dont know soccer     On: 2003-12-03

This is a great book about David Beckham. I received it as a gift and what a fine gift. As an American, i dont know that much about soccer but i did find all the soccer stuff very interesting. He was very candid about his life including the death and kidnap threats toward him and his family that he constantly has to deal with. I found him to be an amazing , admirable person and someone whom God has given an incredible talent and athletic ability. This is a great gift for soccer fans, young and old and it is a great gift for anyone who loves autobiographies. I read the British version which is called My Side , hopefully its about the same as this American one.

The Real Truth about Beckham     On: 2003-11-22

I recently became a fan of David Beckham and reading this book really made me a bigger fan. I recommand this book to any David Beckham Fan. This book takes you to a journey from his childhood days, to meeting his wife Victoria (Posh Spice), his 98 World Cup experience, the birth of his two adorable sons, Brooklyn (4) and Romeo (1), his experince as a Man. U player and his reasons for leaving Man. U and joining Real Madrid. I really felt for his when he explained his experiences. I remember having tears when he talked about the birth of his son, Brooklyn.

The book also has some excellent pictures of him and his family. If your a huge David Beckham fan, than I higly recommand this book.

Great Book!
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-11-19

This book was very interesting when it comes to details and anecdotes. It had a lot of information about Becks and that was what made this book fun to read.
Despite how great the book is, it can be better. It can have more detail about a few things, such as Becks role with his boss and less details on subjects such as lossing a match and how it felt.
But other than that, it is a great book and I recomment this to everyone who knows Dave and is a fan of his.

Good insight into Beckham's life at the moment     On: 2003-10-28

My review may be a little bit biased because I really like David Beckham, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The only reason Im giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I would have a liked a little bit more detail.

I read a recent review on here where someone said they were disappointed that Becks used Americanized language in the book. He should know that there was a UK and a US version of this book released, hence the use of soccer instead of football, etc. The UK book is called David Beckham: My Side and is written for the English audience. I also questioned how much of the book was penned by David or the co-author Tom Watt. I cant exactly see Becks sitting down to a computer and writing his memoirs. But who cares - it was written from his point of view and I really enjoyed being able to get inside his head.

Id say the most interesting parts of the book were his rows with Alex Ferguson, leading to his eventual sale to Real Madrid and his feelings behind his sending off at the 1998 World Cup. I guess I wanted a book that would tell some behind-the-scenes type stuff and those were some of the highlights.

If you like David Beckham, I think youd enjoy this book.

Mediocre bio of outstanding footballer.
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-10-23

.
Becks is an outstanding footballer, no doubt, and a decent story teller (although I really do wonder how much of this bio was actually written by him vs. his co-author). That said, I dont recommend this bio unless you are a serious Beckham fan, which I am not, or are interested in reading a bio that has a lot of filler. (Keano or Fergies bios are better).

Sure, there are some well written anecdotes as well as a few insights into the EPL, International Football, celebrity, fatherhood, and Becks row with Sir Alex... but then there isnt a lot of detail in between.

Finally, and perhaps what turned me off most, is that Becks, a Brit, used American spelling and vocab. Maybe there is a UK edition of the book with football instead of soccer, or realise instead of realize?

This book seemed to me to be the first marketing strike in Beckhams coming invasion of America, not the memoir of one of modern footballs biggest stars I hoped for.
